Approximately 850 km from the Muur, the first Control Point lies at the foot of ‘the dream road of the Alps’. After getting their brevet card stamped at the Explorer Hotel, in the town of Gaschurn, riders will commence the parcours, passing horses and cattle as well as modern-day industrial infrastructure as they ascend the 34 numbered switchbacks, evidence that this is still very much a working mountain.

Known as ‘the dream road of the Alps’, the Silvretta-Hochalpenstraße took shape when historic drovers routes were broadened and connected to create access for the construction of a power plant, and the reservoir that now crowns the 2,032m Bielerhöhe Pass.

The Bielerhöhe lies on the watershed between the Rhine and Danube sitting astride the valleys of the Great Vermunt and the Swiss Vermunt on either side. The lower reaches of the Ochsen valley, which branches off towards the Piz Buin in the south, are submerged in the Silvretta reservoir which dominates the Bierlerhöhe.

The little church, the Barbara Chapel, dates back to the power station construction activities in the 1960s. It was built between 1965 and 1967 to commemorate power station building workers who had died, is dedicated to the patron saint of mountain engineers, and serves as the chapel for the community.

The long and winding “dream road of the Alps” is one of Austria's best loved cols, with 34 sinuous switchbacks offering spectacular views over a vertiginous valley and gradients that challenge the legs and heart rate. The pristine mountain reservoir at the top is a worthy reward. The long swooping descent takes riders from the austere heights of the Bielerhöhe Pass down into the picturesque Tirol
